Monash University startup business and careers in STEMM || February 04, 2019

Monash University accelerator, The Generator, as a key part of developing an entrepreneurial culture at Monash has become one of the most in-demand university startup accelerators. Piloted in 2016, The Generator is one of Australia’s best up-and-coming university accelerators, having mentored over 100 startups and funded 23 successful companies to date.

OUR PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES SUPPORT YOU TO LAUNCH IDEAS THAT CREATE LASTING VALUE IN THE WORLD.

A bootstrapped startup which jumped from $4,000 to $55,000 in revenue per month, and two teams who interviewed for Silicon Valley’s Y Combinator, the US accelerator behind companies such as Airbnb and Dropbox, are just two exceptional results to have come out of the first cohort of founders from The Generator.

Nine out of 187 applications were selected for the newest contingent of startups for 2018. Entrepreneur-in-residence and mentor Kishan Thurairasa, said The Generator’s success centres around its care for the participants. “We genuinely focus on and care about our founders,” he said. “We believe this philosophy will lead to successful founders, impactful startups, and a more entrepreneurial university.”

The Generator’s founder-first approach is a long term strategy, and prioritises investing and nurturing high-potential individuals rather than well-established startups, in the knowledge that even if their current idea isn’t the golden ticket, one of their next ones will be.

And it’s working. Results from the 2017 cohort have proven this model, resulting in one team skyrocketing from $4k/month to $55k/month in revenue, while another scrapped their startup in the final month of the program and launched their next business - Mindset, a hypnosis productivity app - with the learnings, earning 12,000 users in the subsequent three months.

Career in Health and the Victorian Heart Hospital at Monash Clayton Campus || January 17, 2019

A career in health.

The opportunities are endless. Employment in the healthcare and social assistance industry has increased by 445,600 jobs (or 51.5%) in the last 10 years. Healthcare and social assistance is the largest employing industry in Australia with more than 1.3 million people (or 11.5% of the total workforce). And future employment growth is expected to increase further as our population ages and developments in medical technology expand healthcare options.

In addition to the extra demand for workers, Australia continues to experience a shortage of skilled workers in the health sector, in particular: nurses, midwives, medical diagnostic radiographers and physiotherapists, clinical psychologists and general medical practitioners.

Australian health manufacturing exports increased by over 80 per cent from 2002 to 2011 creating a green shoot of Victorian manufacturing rivalled only by food. It is a booming

Monash University: How we educate our students - the digital generation || November 11, 2018

The days of chalk and talk, textbooks and passive learning are fast becoming things of the past as the first wave of digital natives – students brought up during the age of digital technology – challenge the old model of education rooted in linearity and conformity.

“This fourth industrial revolution that we're going through really means a fundamental change to how we educate, how we communicate with people, and how we prepare people for the future,” says Professor Susan Elliott, deputy vice chancellor and vice president (education) at Monash University.

Today, technology is at the centre of the student learning experience. They use it for lectures, for workshops, to complete assignments; everything they do.

Using different forms of digital technologies not only enhances students' content knowledge, but it also enhances a range of 21st Century skills.

They’ve built powerful online personalities and want to engage differently with the world of education, through collaboration and creativity, leaving the old teacher/student dynamic in its wake.

“When I first started teaching, I think students still believed that the person that stood in front of them had all the answers,” says Sharon Pickering, Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

“If only they paid attention closely enough, they too would have the answers.

“I look now, and students are so much more capable and able of figuring out not only what the answers are, but what the more important questions are that we should be asking, and I think teaching and learning is undergoing a revolution to catch up with that.”

Using digital technology in teaching

In this education future, problem-based, collaborative learning replaces simply presenting the student with information, and neuroscience has proved the effectiveness of this type of “active learning”.

“We know now that your retention from a lecture is about 5 per cent to 10 per cent,” says Deputy Vice Chancellor Elliott.

“If they're actively learning, answering questions, teaching each other, talking in class, problem solving, doing quizzes, sharing stories, their retention goes up to 60 per cent to 70 per cent.”

It also means students are better equipped to enter the workforce because they have learnt and applied their knowledge.

“Using different forms of digital technologies not only enhances students' content knowledge, but it also enhances a range of 21st Century skills, like communication, collaboration and teamwork,” says Michael Phillips, senior lecturer in the Department of Education.
